The Vineyard
Located on the South-
Estate, « Chateau du Prada » spreads
Over 6.2 acres in the quaint village of
Labastide d’Armagnac, famous for the
quality of its « terroir ». The vineyard is
planted on sandy, silt-
typical of the Armagnac region. The wines consist only of white grapes, half Folle Blanche and half Colombard, which are required by law to produce Armagnac.
Folle Blanche are difficult to raise because of their sensitivity to the cold and their tendency to spoil. These very traits give the Folle Blanche grapes the fattier flesh and fruity aroma necessary for excellent vintages.
The farming process
Once the fermentation is complete, it is imperative to « burn » the wine during the winter months following the harvest but before April 30th. After that time, the distillation is an ongoing process that takes place inside a traditional still, the « alambic ». Armagnac passes through the « alambic » once, in contrast to Cognac, which passes twice.
This distillation method gives Chateau du Prada’s Armagnac its distinct plum flavor. It renders the eau de vie (alcohol) white, with a 52 proof. This alcohol is then placed into new, large oak wood barrels, called « pieces », that hold approximately 105 to 110 gallons. During this aging process, the eau de vie loses its « fire ».

The aging process
On descending the stairs to our will discover a world of timeless tradition. Our
distillation method is natural and remains true to our historical roots. We refuse
to add any artificial colour or wood chips. Our Armagnac receives its unique, golden
colour from the tannin in the oak-
Philippe de Bouglon himself bottles the Armagnac as the market supply and demand dictate, and each bottle carries an additional label with its bottling date.
Philippe only sells liquor of an exceptional quality, which has been aged for a minimum of 12 years.
